The Final Week

Here we are at the final week of our production.  Like many of you, I have been looking forward to this week for a long time.  We have worked hard, and we are ready!  It was exciting to see the kids in costume on Thursday, and they did such an AMAZING job!  It was fun watching them get so excited and have so much fun.  I would like to send out a final plea for helpers on Monday morning to bring our sets/props to the Junior High.  I have a couple of trucks and a trailer, but we will need extra manpower to lift the big items on and off the trucks both at Hidden Hollow and at Frontier.  We will be meeting at Hidden Hollow at 7:30am to start loading.  Please send me an email if you are able to help out.  We need you, even if you don't have a truck.
I wanted to just remind you of the plan for this week.
Monday, April 23rd:  4:00-8:00  We will be having a tech rehearsal at Frontier with the Junior High tech crew.  I need ONLY Leads (Zoosters, Penguins, Zookeepers, King Julien, Maurice, Mort, Lee, Lynn, Lew, Lars, Mason, Phil).  I also need crew.  I do not need Ensemble 1 and 2 at this particular rehearsal.  The choir will be having a final rehearsal at Hidden Hollow.  This rehearsal will be from 2:45-4:15.  I need choir A, B and C there that day.
Tuesday, April 24th: School Day Assembly We will be performing a few of the numbers for the school during the school day.  For this assembly I need all cast kids, both A and B trackers to come to school at 8:00.  This will not be a common day for the musical kids.  Everyone will go home at their regular track time even though they are getting here at 8:00.  When they get here they need to let their teachers know they are here and then meet down in the gym.  Please have your child wear jeans and their musical t shirts for this performance.  I don't need choir kids to come early, they just need to make their way to the gym after A track recess.  They also need to wear jeans and their musical t shirts.
Tuesday, April 24th: 4:00-8:00  We will be having a blocking/choreography rehearsal.  I need the entire cast and crew for this rehearsal.  Choir will not need to attend this rehearsal.  Since this will be our first rehearsal on a different stage, we need to take time to block and dance a little bit differently.
Wednesday, April 25th 4:00-8:00 This will be our one and only dress rehearsal.  We need all cast, and crew there.  We will run through the show just like it was a show day.  The choir will need to be at Frontier at 5:00.  I know it's a lot of driving if you have both cast and choir members in your family, but please don't drop your choir child off with your cast child.  We don't have enough supervision to watch the choir kids and it will be a really long night for them.  We appreciate your understanding regarding this particular matter.
Thursday, April 26th 4:30-8:00ish  Opening Night!!!  Cast and crew need to be there at 4:30 and the choir A and C will need to be there at 5:00.  Please feed your child prior to coming to the theater.
Friday, April 27th 4:30-8:00ish  Show night!!  Cast and crew need to be there at 4:30 and choir B and C will need to be there at 5:00.  Please feed your child prior to coming to the theater.
Saturday, April 28th  1:00-8:00ish  Matinee and Night Performance.  Cast and crew will need to be there at 1:00.  Choir A and C will need to be there at 1:30.  After the matinee performance we will be having our cast party with a dinner provided by Chick-Fil-A.  This party will be around 4:00, so please plan on having your choir A kids stay for the party.  Because the party will be at around 4:00 please plan on bringing your Choir B kids at 4:00 so they can enjoy the party as well.   Choir B and C will need to stay for the final performance.
Please have your child wear their Act 1 costume to the Junior High each evening.  The exceptions to this are the Zoosters, Penguins, Maintenance, Zookeepers, and Monkeys.  This will cut down on the amount of clothes that accumulate in the dressing rooms.  Have them bring a small backpack or bag to put their clothes in when they change for Act 2.  The dressing rooms are great, but they are small and can get very cluttered, very fast.  Please have your child wear/bring extra deodorant.  Because the space is small and it gets really warm in there, it also gets very stinky! :)
Your child needs to come to the Junior High with makeup on already.  Because of hygienic reasons, I do not want to share make up between the kids.  I ask is that you put some sort of base (foundation, powder) and mascara, eye shadow and lipstick on the kids before they come to the school.  I am not particular about colors, but darker is better on stage.    And yes boys need it too. Keep in mind that we will be adding character/animal face paint on the cast in between the first and second act.  Also, if your child brings their own makeup for touch up,  hair supplies, brushes, etc, please label these items and send them in a small bag.  Choir kids will need to come with both hair and makeup done.
Because we will be at the Junior High past dinner time each night, please send snacks for them to eat during their break times.  Please send the snacks in some sort of disposable lunch sack with their name on it so that we can throw it away and we don't have to worry about lunch boxes getting lost or not making their way back home.

The Time Has Finally Come

I can't believe the time has finally come.  We have all worked so hard and it is now time to show off our stuff.  There are a couple of things I want to remind you of regarding these last couple of weeks. I know it's a long one but please read through to the very end.  Hopefully this email will answer all of your questions, but if not, please email or text me specific questions.
Next week we will be having rehearsals on our regular days.  I need all cast members at all rehearsals.
Monday, April 16th  We will be taking a cast picture for the program.  Please have your child wear jeans and their musical t shirt for this picture.  Choir doesn't have rehearsal on Monday.  For rehearsal that day will be cleaning up and running all of the dance numbers. (I don't need crew here for this rehearsal either).  There are many numbers we haven't run in a while and we need a refresher.  I am hoping it will be kind of like riding a bike and it will come back to us quickly.
Wednesday, April 18th We will be running through the show with all sets and props.  I need all Cast and Crew here for this rehearsal.  I also need Choir A and C here from 3:45-5:45.  They will be going through the entire show with us.
Thursday, April 19th We will be running through the show with all sets and props, and as many costumes as we have.  I need all Cast and Crew here for this rehearsal.  I also need Choir B and C here from 3:45-5:45.  They will be going through the entire show with us.  We are going to try and do a dress rehearsal this day (minus hair and makeup) so please have your child wear underclothing (spankies and cami) so they can comfortably change into their costumes.
Here is the schedule for the following week at Frontier
Monday, April 23rd:  4:00-8:00  We will be having a tech rehearsal at Frontier with the Junior High tech crew.  I need all Leads (Zoosters, Penguins, Zookeepers, King Julien, Maurice, Mort, Lee, Lynn, Lew, Lars, Mason, Phil).  I also need crew.  I do not need Ensemble 1 and 2 at this particular rehearsal.  The choir will be having a final rehearsal at Hidden Hollow.  This rehearsal will be from 2:45-4:15.  I need choir A, B and C there that day.

I am still looking for parents who can come and help.  Specifically, I need help with clean up each night.  The Junior High doesn't charge us facility fees, but they do expect that we leave their space clean.  It will not take us long if I have 5 or 6 parents who are willing to stay a little later and help us clean the auditorium as well as the bathrooms that we use.  To access the sign up, please click here.

Lastly, I am resending both the Act-O-Gram order form link here and the video order form here.  If you are planning on ordering and haven't already please do so.  All Act-o-Gram orders need to be completed by Friday, April 20th.  You don't have to pay for either until the week of the show.  I have also included the facebook/instagram image one last time if you could please download it and post it on social media to advertise to your friends.  Please be aware that pre-sale ticket prices are different than prices at the door.  Children are $3.00 pre-sale and Adults are $5.00 pre-sale.  All tickets at the door are $5.00.  We will stop selling pre-sale tickets at the school on Wednesday afternoon.  Any tickets purchased after that date will be $5.00.

It is going to be a long couple of weeks, but they should prove to be very rewarding for all involved.  We have worked so hard and I am so proud of these kids.  Thank you for sharing them with me.  I have learned so much from each one of them.

Here we go again!

I hope you all had a great Spring Break.  I appreciate all of the help over the break.  We were able to get a lot done and we are ready to hit the ground running this week.  Before I give you the schedule for this week, I wanted to let you know a couple of things.  A couple of weeks ago I sent out a sign up genius for parent helpers during the week of the show.  If you haven't had a chance to look it over yet, please do.  There are several things that we will need help with during SHOW WEEK.  You can find the sign up here.  Also as a reminder, if you would like to order an act-o-gram for your favorite actor the deadline is Friday, April 20th.  This is just a fun way to honor your favorite actor.  Each act-o-gram will have either a full sized candy bar, a flower, or both attached.  A couple of weeks ago I sent an online order form for those.  If you can't find it in your email you can access it here.  If you have trouble accessing the form, please send me an email and I will send it to you directly.  Finally, if you are interested in ordering a professional video recording of the show, please fill out the order form found here.
So the next couple of weeks are vital.  We are so lucky to have time to run the show with sets and props in it's entirety several times before we get to the junior high.  I ask that if you have conflicts with rehearsals for the next couple of weeks that you make it your priority to have your child here.
Monday, April 9th:  We need the entire cast and choir at rehearsal.  We also need the crew here.  We will be running the 2nd half of the show.
Wednesday, April 11th: Again, I need the entire cast and choir at rehearsal.  We also need crew here.  We will be running the 1st half of the show.
Thursday, April 12th:  There is a slight conflict with this rehearsal date since Hidden Hollow's 2nd annual Art Festival will be that night.  Because Mrs. Hickenlooper and Mrs. Madsen will be using the gym for this and will need to set up during rehearsal time, we will be having a small rehearsal with the following characters.  Alex, Marty, Melman, Gloria, Penguins, Maurice, Mort, King Julien, Lee, Lew, Lars, Lynn.  We will be running through and polishing up blocking on scenes.

A Few things before Spring Break

I wanted to let you know just a few things before we go on break.  First of all, we are not having any rehearsals for the entire week of Spring Break.  We will, however, have a couple of work days.  On Monday and Wednesday, April 2nd & 4th.  We will be at the school from 9:00am-2:00pm working on sets, props, costumes, etc.  If you can come and help, you are not expected to commit to the entire time period, but we would love to have you come and do what you can.  I would love for both parents and students to come and help, however, please don't plan on dropping your kids off to help without parent supervision.   We only have these 2 days planned but Mrs. Patin and I will probably be there more time than this.  I will send text messages out if I am going to work on other days and times.
Second, I will be posting the minus tracks here on the blog over the next day or so (music minus vocals).  Please take a minute to download the music or have a time when your child can listen to the tracks and practice their vocals in order to keep fresh.
Next, I have created an online order form for professional video DVD's of the show.  If you are interested in purchasing a video recording of the show, please check your email for the order form and fill it out.  Unfortunately I can't take payment online, but you can come into the office and pay for the DVD by card, cash or check.  The purchase price is $20.00 each.  I can take payment at the show, but it might be easier if you come in and pay prior to show week.
Lastly, I have prepared a sign up genius for show week help needs.  Over the last couple of weeks I have had many of you ask what I need help with.  Show week is the time I will need the most help.  Please take a minute to look through and sign up for anything you are willing and able to help with.  You can access the sign up here
Thanks again for all that you do.  We are getting so close and I can feel the excitement every time we come to rehearsal.

Week of March 26th-30th

Well it's our last week before Spring Break.  We have just a few things left to learn before we go on break.  I just want to remind you that we will not be having rehearsals during Spring Break.  We will, however, have a few work days during the week.  I am not positive yet what days we will be there, but I will let you know very soon.  During the work days we will be finishing up sets, props and costumes.  This is the plan for this week.
Monday, March 26th:  We will be blocking the rest of the scenes of the show with the leads.  I need Penguins, Zoosters, King Julien, Maurice, and Mort.  We will also be starting the choreography for Together Forever.  I will need Ensemble 1, Phil and Mason.  Ensemble 2 will not need to be at rehearsal on Monday.
Wednesday, March 28th:  We will be finishing up the choreography for Together Forever.  I need the entire cast at rehearsal on Wednesday.  Ensemble 1 will be cleaning up what they learned on Monday, and we will be adding the leads and Ensemble 2 into the number.
Thursday, March 29th:  We will be going through the bows and Move it reprise for the end of the show.  I need the entire cast at rehearsal on Thursday.

Only a Couple of Weeks before Spring Break

I can't believe there are only a couple of weeks before Spring Break.  Our hope is to have the entire show choreographed and blocked prior to spring break and then to stumble through the show making necessary changes and cleaning up all the numbers in those two weeks after Spring Break.  We are on our way, and I believe we can do it.  On the original calendar we were supposed to start working on Paradise at last Thursday's rehearsal.  We had to make some adjustments and the number now needs to be choreographed in 2 days instead of 1.  This is a big number that requires most of the cast, so I am asking that you make every effort to make sure your child is at rehearsal on both Monday and Wednesday of this week for the entire 2 hour block.  It is really hard to place a child and teach them after all of the blocking has taken place.
Monday, March 19th and Wednesday, March 21st:  We will be choreographing Paradise.  This number requires the entire cast, minus the penguins and the Foosa.  The penguins and the Foosa do not need to be at rehearsal on Monday or Wednesday.
Thursday, March 22nd:  Zoosters, Julien, Mort, Maurice, Foosa, Mason, Phil, Ensemble 1 and Penguins.  Thursday's practice will be a little different due to the fact that our first graders are performing their program for their parents.  This program starts at 6:00, so we will end rehearsal at 5:30 and ask the kids to stay a couple of extra minutes to help us set chairs up.  Due to the fact that I am a first grade teacher and have to attend to my class as they start showing up at 5:30, I will need all the help I can get setting up chairs and cleaning up so that we are ready for a program.

Alos, please be watching for another email I will be sending out in the next couple of days.  There are a few things that the cast will need to provide costume wise for the beginning of the show when they are zoo guests and New York citizens.  These are basic things that you should have at home.  Each group has specific clothing items that they will need so I will send these emails out individually.  Please be aware that each cast member will need to have a pair of spankys (bike shorts) and a cami to wear under their clothing.  Most of our costume changes are quick and need to be done in the dressing room in front of other cast members.  It is better that they have something on to keep them modest as they are changing in front of others.
Finally, I will also be sending out a link, (probably in the next week) for a sign up genius.  This will include all of the sign ups I will need for show week.  For example, ticket sales, concessions, green room helpers, choir supervision, etc.  Please be looking for that and sign up for whatever you can help with.
Thanks for all of your help and support.  These kids are WONDERFUL, and it has been so much fun working with them and getting to know each of them.  They are definitely a talented group of kids.

March 12th-15th

This past week was probably one of the most productive ones that we have had.  It was fun to watch the kids get so excited to learn the big number iconically associated with Madagascar.  Every year around this time I see an increased level of commitment and excitement for the show.  We are getting so close and the kids are starting to catch the vision.
Monday, March 12th:  I will need the entire cast to be at rehearsal.  We are going to clean up the big numbers of the show.  We have rehearsed the vocals and choreography for each number, but it is traditionally a difficult thing for the kids to put the two together.  We will be running these numbers over and over getting them "show ready".  I need Alex, Melman and King Julien to come to rehearsal at 3:30 instead of 4:30 so they can work with Mrs. Hickenlooper on vocals before everyone else gets there.
Wednesday, March 14th:  We will be learning Steak.  For steak I need Alex, Maurice and Ensemble 1.  There have been several questions over the last couple of weeks regarding which ensemble certain characters are in.  I want to clarify this.  In the first half of the show, the Zookeepers have their specific parts in the zoo/New York scenes.  These same characters are part of ensemble 1 in the second half of the show.
Thursday, March 15th:  I need the Zoosters, penguins, King Julien, Maurice, Mason, Phil and Ensemble 1.  Ensemble 1 will learn the rest of Steak, penguins will work on their Sea Shanty and the Zoosters, King Julien and Maurice will be working on their scenes.

On to Madagascar

Last week was amazing.  The kids did such a good job.  I am excited about the first half of the show, and I am even more excited to move on to the Madagascar portion.  We have 12 rehearsals between now and Spring Break and we need to learn the second half of the show in that time.  We will be using all 3 days this week to learn I Like to Move it.
Monday, March 5th:  I know there is no school, but we still have rehearsal.  Rehearsal will be from 4:30-6:30 since the teachers are at the school all day for meetings, and Ballroom will still be having practice at their regular time.  On Monday I need King Julien, Maurice, Mort, Zoosters and all of Ensemble 1
Wednesday, March 7th:  I need King Julien, Maurice, Mort, Zoosters and all of Ensemble 2
Thursday, March 8th: We will be putting it all together with everyone!  I need the whole cast there on Thursday.

The First Half is Finished

We are at that midway point and the first half of the show is finished.  We have learned (almost) everything and we are ready to leave New York and make our way to Madagascar.  It's exciting!!  I continue to be amazed at how well it is all coming together.  This week marks our first week with Thursday rehearsals.  Just a reminder that Monday rehearsals are still 4:30-6:30 and Wednesday and Thursday rehearsals will be 3:45-5:45.  Here is the plan for this week:
Monday, February 26th:  We will be finishing up some blocking and working on characterization on the scenes in the first half.  This blocking will only include The Zoosters (Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria), The Penguins, Mason, Phil and Carl Hammernose.  In addition to this rehearsal, I would like all of Ensemble 2 to come from 4:30-5:30 for a costume fitting.  Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Evans have been working hard on costumes and we need to make sure they all fit and that we have a cohesive look.  Please keep in mind that Ensemble 2 will be going home at 5:30 (the same time as the choir).
Wednesday, February 28th:  We will be doing a stumble through of the first half of the show.  This rehearsal will include all cast members.  In our stumble through, we will go through Act 1 as many times as we can and take notes on things that we need to work on or clarify before moving on to Act 2.
Thursday, March 1st:  We will go over all notes from Wednesday and make adjustments to Act 1.  After making adjustments, we will go through the first half as many times as we can.

This week not only marks the completion of Act 1 of the show, it is also the week that TICKETS GO ON SALE!!!.  Tickets will be available starting Thursday, March 1st in the front office.  Each family will be receiving 2 complimentary tickets.  These tickets will be passed out on Thursday during the regular school day.  They will be given to the oldest child in each family.  Since tickets will be available on Thursday, I have a small favor to ask each of you.  I have attached an image to advertise our show.  Please take a minute to download the image here.  I would LOVE it if each of you would post this image, with a small description on your facebook or instagram feed so that all of your friends and family can mark the dates in their calendars.  Thank you so much in advance!!!

Another Short Week

We are making such progress.  I am so proud and super excited to see the first half of the show come together.  This week is another short week due to the holiday. I hope you all had a great and safe one.  This week we will be learning Grand Central.
Wednesday, February 21st:  Zoosters, Penguins, Mason, Phil, Maintenance Crew, Alex Fan Club, Marty Fan Club, Veterinary Assistants, and Vendors (Stephanie and Parker only)  will all be in this number and will be working on it this week.  I would also like the Zookeepers and lionesses to be at rehearsal to refresh and practice choreography as well as vocals.  Ensemble 2 will NOT have to be at rehearsal this week.
Also, as you are planning your summer trips, please mark your calendar for June 2nd.  This will be the Pony Express Days parade and we will be participating for the second year as a musical theater/student council/ballroom group.  Last year was the first year that we walked in the parade, and it was SUPER FUN!!!  The kids that participated had an amazing time and it is a memory that I will cherish for a long, long time.  If you are able to be there, you won't be sorry!

February 12th and 14th

I am glad we will be having 2 rehearsals this week.  We are so close to learning the whole first half of the show.  Here is the plan for this week

Only One Practice This Week

We only have one practice this week due to parent teacher conferences!  I need all cast members at rehearsal on Monday, February 5th to learn the rest of Wild and Free.
Also, the t shirts will be ordered on Tuesday of this week.  I am so excited to start seeing them on the kids at school.

January 29th and 31st

Well the opening number is almost done, and in true Mrs. Patin fashion it is SPECTACULAR!!  The kids are really enjoying themselves and learning so fast.
Here is the plan for this week's rehearsals.
Monday, January 29th:  We will be finishing up and polishing up some things in the opening number  so I do need all cast members to attend rehearsal.
Wednesday, January 31st:  We will be working on Wild and Free.  I know that on the Show Numbers paper that we passed out at the parent meeting it says the Entire Cast.  While this is true, I don't need Ensemble 2 to attend rehearsal on Wednesday.  The majority of the number will involve the leads and ensemble 1, and we will put ensemble 2 in on Monday, February 5th.  I do want the penguins to come both days so they can work on characterization with Mrs. Fulton.

I will be ordering musical t shirts on Tuesday, February 6th.  Please make sure you have paid your donation prior to this date.  I am aware that it's not always convenient to shell out an extra $30+ and that many of us including myself have to budget and wait for payday.   As a team we are really on top of things this year and have purchased the bulk of things that we need for sets, props, costumes.  In saying that, we have spent a lot of the money that we've collected.  I just want to make sure that we have enough in our musical account to pay for the t shirts.  Thanks for your support in this way.
Please remember that the t shirts are covered with the donation.  You do not need to pay any extra for them.  However, if you are interested in purchasing any extra t shirts for yourself or other family members I would LOVE that.  There will be a cost of $8.00 for each additional shirt ordered (XXL or larger are $10.00).  If you would like to order extra shirts please email me with the following information:  size of shirt, name of cast or choir member, and whether you want the cast names or choir names on the back of your shirt.  Please send your emails prior to the February 6th date.

January 22nd and 24th

I know I've said this before, but I am super impressed with the progress we have made in just a few rehearsals.  Never before have we been learning harmonies in the first week.  And never before have we been able to practice our vocals with the instrumental tracks in the first week!  A big hats off to all of you and to Mrs. Hickenlooper and Mrs. Slack.  (I hope you're not sick of the songs yet 😍)
I talked to the kids on Wednesday about being "off script" on each number prior to us learning the choreography for that number.  Tomorrow and Wednesday we will be learning the choreography for "Showtime" the opening number.  There is no need for your kids to bring their scripts since we will be dancing.  Please make sure they are strong and confident on their vocals and spoken lines (if applicable) so that we can be off script by tomorrow afternoon's rehearsal.
Just a reminder that Mondays rehearsals will be from 4:30-6:30.  This gives your child plenty of time to go home, get a snack, and rest before coming to rehearsal.  Please have them wear comfortable clothes and shoes so they can dance both tomorrow and Wednesday.
Also, I am currently waiting for price quotes on a couple of different t shirt designs.  I would love to have the t shirts ordered the first week of February (by February 5th).  In saying this, I have collected donations from half of you up to this point.  I will be ordering a total of 200+ t shirts which adds up quickly (It will cost approximately $1,300.  In saying this, I will not be able to order the shirts until I have the majority of donations collected.  If you haven't sent in your donation, I would appreciate it if you could do so as soon as possible.  I understand that there are/can be extenuating circumstances that would prevent some of you from making a donation.  If this is the case, please send me an email.  You can send a check made out to Hidden Hollow Elementary to rehearsal with your child, you can send cash or you can come into the office and pay Linda with a credit/debit card.
Thank you again for all of your help and support.

Snacks

It looks like we will be selling snacks at rehearsals after all.  This will be an excellent opportunity for us to earn a little extra money so that we will be able to buy another storage shed to store costumes and props.  I know I said I would wait until Friday, but I have had a large number of parents surveyed already and I don't think the results will change much in the next day.
I am looking for 2 parents who would be willing to come in for about an hour and sell snacks at rehearsals.  Please sign up for one or multiple time slots that you are available for. Click here to find the sign up genius.   Our best time for selling snacks is right before rehearsal starts.  Please plan on being there from 4:00-5:00 on Mondays and 3:15-4:15 on Wednesdays (and Thursdays when they start).
Thank you so much for your willingness to help.

Let's Get This Party Started

I am so excited to get started on Hidden Hollow's production of Madagascar.  I am overwhelmed with the number of you who came to the parent meeting, and especially overwhelmed with the number of kids that would like to participate in our choir.  I had several parents come and sign up for choir on Friday (after the meeting) and I lost track of who got paperwork and who didn't.  For this reason I am posting the information here.  I also want to have a digital copy of the cast paperwork available for all of you as well.  If you would like to download a copy of the paperwork for the cast please click here.
For this week I need ALL cast members here both on Monday and on Wednesday.  There was a little bit of confusion about times, even after the meeting.  I have to apologize for this.  Monday rehearsals will be from 4:30-6:30 and Wednesday rehearsals will be from 3:45-5:45.  When we start Thursday rehearsals in March, they will also be from 3:45-5:45.
For this week please make sure your child comes with their script/songbook.  We will be reading through the entire show on Monday and then working on learning vocals on Wednesday.
Also, be aware that the PTA will not be selling treats/snacks before rehearsal, so please send a snack with your child.  A water bottle would be a great idea as well!
